Du miasme à la jonquille (From miasma to daffodil)

The Art and History Museum of Provence hosts the 2023 garden competition.

The composition is set in the garden of one of the city's most beautiful private mansions. The Clapier Cabris mansion, which was completed in 1774, became a perfumery in 1781. In its garden, perfumed plants, including daffodils, flourish.

In Alain Corbin's Le Miasme et la Jonquille, this flower symbolises the revolution of olfaction in the 18th and 19th centuries. Grasse became the industrial centre. The success of its floral notes is embodied in the factory chimneys.

The Fragonard Perfumery chimney still overlooks the garden of the former mansion, now a museum. As if it had come from a time when the black smoke and coal of the mines gave birth to the most subtle fragrances. From shadow to light, from miasma to daffodil...
