2021 edition

"It is the smallest plot in the world and then it is the whole world." Such were the words of Michel Foucault to define the garden, this enclosed and tangible space where all follies are possible. Is that the reason many artists, whether writers, poets, painters or sculptors, have made plants a source of inspiration? Some of them went still further by making their own garden a mirror of their creativity, their garden-work. Here I am thinking of Giverny, the plant palette of Claude Monet and a real incarnation of the impressionist spirit; of the Clos Lucé, an exceptional verdant setting where Leonardo da Vinci fed his passion for botany; of Kandinsky's garden of abstraction in Murnau, as well as the Portlligat garden, a surrealist haven of peace for Salvador Dali, ... On the theme "Artists' Gardens," the Côte d'Azur Garden Festival, organised by the Department of the Alpes-Maritimes, offers you a timeless walk where art and nature become one. A big thank you to actress Audrey Fleurot who enthusiastically agreed to be Patron of this third edition. From 9 May to 9 June 2021, we invite you to discover a real open-air museum through 24 artistic gardens, including 13 pop-up creations in competition in five communes of the Department and, for the first time in the Festival's history, in Monaco, and 11 gardens outside the competition. While this Festival, established in 2017, showcases our exceptional cultural heritage and strengthens the attraction of the Alpes-Maritimes for tourists, this year it will have, more than ever, a special flavour. Initially planned for April, we did everything possible to maintain this event. After a dark year, it will be, for each of us, resident of the Côte d'Azur or visitor, enthusiast or amateur, a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature close to home. I wish you magnificent escapades along the perfumed paths of the Côte d'Azur.

Department of the Alpes-Maritimes

More than ever, let's take a breath, contemplate, savour the moment!

The Gardens of the Côte d’Azur in themselves reveal all the culture, elegance and know-how of our destination. With more than 75 gardens open to the public, including thirteen listed as "Jardins Remarquables" [Remarkable Gardens], the Alpes-Maritimes have a unique natural heritage.

For its third edition, the Côte d'Azur Garden Festival will take place from 3 to 28 April 2021 and will have the theme "Artists' Gardens." For almost a month, and alongside the actress Audrey Fleurot, who is the patron of this 2021 edition, there are seventeen new pop-up creations designed by international landscape-gardeners to make you dream in Antibes, Cannes, Grasse, Menton, Nice and, for the first time, in Monaco.

Established by the Department of the Alpes-Maritimes in 2017 and building on the growing success of its first two editions, the Côte d’Azur Garden Festival has become an iconic cultural event at the service of the destination's tourist discovery. This biennial event aims to highlight the natural heritage of the Alpes-Maritimes while generating an additional tourist flow in spring and substantial economic spin-offs for all tourism professionals of the CÔTE D’AZUR FRANCE. An event which is all the more keenly awaited in 2021 as it will contribute to the re-launch of our destination with quality, accessible and open-air content.

“The Côte d’Azur is the greenhouse where the roots are growing. Paris is the shop where the flowers are sold.” In these few words, Jean Cocteau already underlined the historic link between the Côte d’Azur and its gardens, as well as its know-how, which is now internationally recognised as regards horticulture and the production of flowers for perfume. From production to processing, all the beauty and history of a sector of excellence for the Côte d'Azur is in the spotlight in this Festival. As a historic nod, 2021 will also mark the centenary of the famous No. 5, a fragrance born in Cannes on the Côte d’Azur in 1921.

So, whether you are from the Côte d'Azur or a visitor to our beautiful destination, we invite you on a cultural walk with the scents of the Côte d’Azur.

Welcome to our gardens,

Come and experience #CotedAzurFrance.

Mayor of Cannes, Chair of the Regional Tourism Committee, Côte d’Azur France

When the artist conceptualizes his own garden, it’s his way of writing his personal story. His imagination, his vision will be expressed in the creation of his own paradise.

Telling a garden story is about a whole lifetime history, during each one will listen specially to the teaching of the oldest Human’s friend: the Tree, but also the flowers and all the beauty of Mother Nature. The history will continue beyond to offer the humanity a real living heritage.

If the oxygen of tree hundred trees are necessary in a Human’s Life, these trees as alive sculptures are a gift for the eternity to those who will inherit.

And above all, we should not forget the essential gesture of the gardener who sows the seeds of flowers, trees, herbs, water, stones, for designing the landscape in harmony with the creator’s perspective: In his garden, in his paradise!

The decor is on the scene, the actors can come up on stage … big success story at the 3rd “Festival Des Jardins de la Côte d’Azur”!
